2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 4Matic Wagon Review
The2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 4Matic Wagon steps up to the spotlight, and fitsnicely in place next to the sedan and coupe as they complete theall-new E-Class lineup. This new edition of a wagon comes with only oneengine choice in the US the 3.5-liter V6 engine and an all-wheel driveformat.
Walkaround
For the first time,U.S. buyers will have the option to equip the E-class wagon with a sportpackage, which includes perforated front brake discs with paintedcalipers, 5-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels, gearshift paddles, modifiedfront and rear fascias, twin trapezoidal exhaust pipes, and uniquerocker panels. An AMG wheel package will be available, adding 5-spoke18-inch alloy wheels and a 3-spoke steering wheel. The rear side windowsslope down in a somewhat coupe-like manner, but the roof line remainshigh, allowing the cargo hold to swallow a whopping 69 cubic feet ofstuff with the rear seats folded down. The wagon sports the inevitableroof rack, and it shares the sedan's "dramatic overall effect".Mercedes-Benz says the new wagon has been equipped with stiffer shockabsorber settings and torsion stabilizer bars than the outgoing model. An automatic, self-leveling suspension system called "Agility Control"keeps the wagon at the same height even when fully loaded with cargo.
Summary
The E-class wagon is distinguishedfrom its competition by various electronic safety systems such asAttention Assist (a "drowsiness detection" system), a hefty set of nineair bags and, of course, the Pre-Safe system, which tightens seat beltsand initiates emergency braking on its own when an accident is deemedunavoidable. It even employs individual wheel braking to provideequalization for the vehicle, which is partly due to the planetarycenter differential. This is indeed an impressive feature for anyvehicle to deliver better traction while on-road, especially duringcases wherein the weather causes you to lose traction, such as duringsnow or rain. Station wagons as safe and luxurious as this one aren'teasy to pass up. Offering the practicality of an SUV combined with theperformance and road holding of a sedan, and did we mention it's aMercedes-Benz?
