BMW 3 SERIES REVIEW
Here we stand at the middle of
the life cycle of the current-generation BMW 3 Series the
E90/E91/E92/E93, as BMW geeks know this car in its various guises.
Something is needed to fan the embers of excitement to ensure that they
burn bright for three or so more years, so BMW has undertaken an
improvement program, even though not much has really needed to be
improved. The sedan and wagon models underwent mid-cycle refreshes for
2009, getting off easy with just a tasteful cosmetic nip/tuck and nearly
no other changes. Now BMW has released images and info on the
face-lifted 2011 3-series coupe and convertible, which involve not just
new looks, but also the 335i swapping its awesome twin-turbo motor for
one with just one turbo.
OPTIONS
As with
the 328i, the 2011 335i will be offered with a choice of six-speed
manual or six-speed automatic transmissions. (Sadly, BMW wont offer the
3er with an N55/eight-speed automatic combo, as is planned for the
upcoming 535i GT.) But BMW will continue to make xDrive all-wheel drive
available on all 3-series coupes. No matter the transmission or to how
many wheels the power is delivered, every 335i promises to be plenty
quick: BMW estimates that the manual-equipped rear-wheel-drive 335i
coupe can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, with the droptop
requiring 5.5 seconds. Add another 0.2 second to each time for the
automatics. Even quicker is the xDrive-equipped 335i coupe, which
overcomes all-wheel drives inherent weight penalty and hustles to 60 in a
claimed 5.2 seconds in manual form and 5.3 with the auto. Those stats
seem conservative to us, as weve repeatedly seen high fours from 335i
coupes in the past. We expect to squeeze similar numbers from the 2011
model.
SUMMARY
Expect the freshened
2011 BMW 335i Coupe and Convertible to land in the U.S. and Canada just
as the 335is disembarks, which should be late April. Pricing is just
under $1,000 more per car over the outgoing edition, the surcharge for
the convertible remaining around $8,500 above the equivalently equipped
coupe. The 3 Series represents 37 percent of BMW sales worldwide
annually and competition gets heated with the Audi A5/S5, Infiniti G37
and Mercedes C-Class range, among others. Some adjustment and nuance to
the lineup like this can never hurt.

BMW seems to love more the Americans than Europeans, because on this market, the American one, will bring for all the version of BMW M3 2011, the Competition Package, as optional. SUMMARY
Inside it's more standard-issue 3-Series than you might expect. There's something aloof about this interior that doesn't warm up, even with time. There's a Gaggenau-style coolness even with the custom colors and trims that can be ordered-though no one will ever complain about its big, clear gauges and dials. Touches of carbon-fiber paneling emphasize the big structural differences with other 3-Series cars, but you can choose more traditional walnut trim. "The M3's interior has undergone fewer alterations than the exterior, but there are a number of significant changes.

Not only does the 760Lihave power to spare, it has an abundance of gears, too. Between theenormous engine and the abused rear tires lies a ZF automatictransmission with eight forward speeds the most ever in a BMW. Firstgear is used only in Sport mode and at the risk of leaving behind acloud of tire smoke. Eighth is superlong for relaxed cruising theengine turns over at an almost inaudible 3600 rpm while oozing down theautobahn at its governed top speed of 155 mph. Allowed to run free, the760Li could attain another 50 mph or so, and its precisely thesetremendous performance reserves that make the BMW flagship seem sorelaxed even in the fastest traffic.
Options
Double-glazed windows ensure that only a whisper of wind noise entersthe cabin. Equipped as standard with almost every option available onlesser 7s, the 760Li is a rolling technology showcase whether youre upfront or in the capacious rear seating area. Many of BMWs newestdriver-assistance systems blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning,rear- and sideview cameras, high-beam assistant, and a head-up displayare included in the price of entry. Integral active steering (whichvaries the steering ratio in addition to using the rear wheels to steerthe car) is also standard.
Summary
Twenty-one years ago, when the first V-12-powered 7-series debuted (witha comparatively paltry 300 hp), we suggested that BMW "buy or borrow aRolls-Royce . . . to see how best to convey the aura of absolutesuperiority." In the two decades since then, BMW has indeed boughtRolls-Royce (the entire company, not just a single car) and hasobviously learned a thing or two about luxury. The 760Li drips withopulence but remains a luxury sedan best enjoyed from the driver's seat.Especially if you're the type of driver who wants your car to slicethrough traffic with the speed of a sports car and the poise of astretch limousine.
